5 signs you need to part with your current mattress for sleep

Breakups are hard. They can be messy. But sometimes they’re the only way to move forward … to sleep better. The older we get, the more our physical needs change, so the best mattress a few years ago may no longer be enough for you.

If your relationship with sleep is not as harmonious as it could be, you don’t have to just lie there and endure it. And we’re not talking about the odd bad night’s sleep here – we’re talking about sub-par slumber night after night.

As we explain in our feature on how often you should change your mattress, your lying position makes a huge difference to your relationship with sleep. This is how you can tell if it’s time to ditch your current mattress and move on with something much more. It’s a good time to do so too, thanks to all of the attractive Labor Day mattress sales that are now flooding in.

1. Your mattress is causing you pain

No mattress ever wants to cause discomfort, but over time some just do. And older models that sag can lead to neck and back pain – or exacerbate existing pain and stiffness.

There are many causes of physical discomfort and pain and if you have any concerns you should speak to your doctor. However, if you only experience pain and stiffness when lying in your bed or sleeping in the morning after a night’s sleep, then you and your current mattress will need to part.

We recommend working with a model that offers good pressure relief. A high quality memory foam mattress could make your dream come true, and if we were to play mattress mediators, we would send you out with Nectar’s full foam model (read our Nectar memory foam mattress review to find out all about it).

Nectar will shower you with free gifts (pillows and sheets) and give you 365 nights to put it to the test. A Queen is on sale $ 899 (up from $ 1,298), and these free gifts make her hard to beat

2. You sleep better in any other bed

While your mattress could accuse you of cheating, if you sleep much better in another bed, it is a warning sign that your bed is no longer right for you. But considering how long you and your current mattress have been together, we make sure there are no other issues at play …

That means we have to rule out noise and light pollution as well as fidgety bed buddies. What was going on in the other room where you spent that magical night? Was it dark, calm, and cool while your bedroom is usually hot, loud, and light? In this case, your mattress may not be the only culprit. Check out our Optimizing Your Bedroom For Better Sleep feature to see if minor changes might help.

This means that if it is your sleeping environment and you wake up in pain after a night on your mattress, then no amount of bedroom optimization will save your sleep. For pure hotel luxury and comfort at home, we recommend the Saatva Classic (our Saatva Classic mattress review contains all the details on why it is one of our most important mattress crushes).

3. Your mattress is so warm that it suffocates you

We all love to feel cozy and snuggled up in bed, but there comes a point where it all gets a little too much. However, it is difficult to feel hot in bed, entirely on your current mattress, so we have to do detective work. Is your bedroom set to a sleep-friendly temperature (65 degrees Fahrenheit / 18.3 degrees Celsius)? Do you feel cooler in bed when you open a window or use a fan? If none of these work and you’re still too hot, ask yourself “is it me?”

Certain drugs make you “overheated”; menopause and pregnancy cause hot flashes and sweats. In these circumstances, you would benefit from a cooling mattress. Feeling too hot in bed is frustrating because it disrupts your sleep, making you wake up more often, which affects your health.

A cooling mattress could be a turning point, but proper ones like the Eight Sleep Pro or Tempur-Breeze are expensive. We’ve highlighted a cheaper one below, but we also recommend checking out your bedding. Sometimes switching to breathable sheets and bed pillows helps.

4. It no longer meets your (comfort) needs

Stress and other mental health problems can make us restless in bed, so check with yourself to see if there is something else at play here. The tossing and turning can also be a sign that your current mattress isn’t supportive enough or comfortable enough to sleep the way you like to sleep. Changes in our body weight can also make our mattresses feel very different than they used to be.

For example, your mattress may have provided all the support you needed with a heavier body weight, but if you lost weight it may now feel too hard and uncomfortable. It also works the other way around: if you’ve gained weight, your previously soft mattress may not provide the support you need to properly align your spine.

So ask yourself, has my body changed? Have my housing needs changed? Helix is a great option if you’re not sure what strength you need as it can be adjusted to suit your sleeping style and body. If that sounds like the type of mattress you’d like to know better, check out our Helix Midnight mattress review.

5. Your mattress is older than your mother

Sometimes an age difference can be a wonderful thing in an adult relationship, but not so much when it comes to mattresses. While top latex models come with a 25-year guarantee and some brands of plucky mattresses in a box come with a lifetime guarantee, the average mattress lasts around eight years.

When yours is older, you should be clear about whether or not they are properly supporting you. How do you feel when you lie on it? Is there any sagging that rotating the mattress can’t fix, or do you feel springs pushing through? Does it have more stains than a wooden sideboard? All of these are signs that you need something fresh and new in your life.

For a popular mattress that comes with a lifetime warranty, the DreamCloud mattress could have everything you were looking for. This stunning mattress is also available for a 365 night trial so you have plenty of time to see if it makes a good partner for your sleeping relationship.

The DreamCloud mattress: $ 200 off + $ 399 free gifts
From $ 699
– This plush hybrid mattress is more breathable than the full foam Nectar because it uses foam and coils, and with a 365 night trial, it’s in for the long haul. Buy it on sale and get a queen for $ 999 (up from $ 1,598). Plus, receive $ 399 in gifts to transform your bed into a zen den

Remember: Put your need for sleep first

When deciding whether or not to part with your current mattress, you need to put your own needs first. Okay, you’ve been together for several years or more, but don’t feel obliged to stay in this mattress relationship if it doesn’t make you happy anymore. Your sleep is most important, and you deserve the best night’s sleep possible.

If you’re wondering whether to give your old mattress one last chance, see if a good mattress topper can bring back some of that lost comfort and support. You can also freshen up your look with a pristine mattress protector or learn how to properly clean a mattress. Whatever you choose, do it for the sake of your sleep and you will soon feel confident in your decision.
