Pakistani People’s Party Vice Chairman and ex-President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari was hospitalized on Friday after his health deteriorated.
PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari is pouring into Karachi from Islamabad, while Bakhtawar Bhutto-Zardari and her husband have reached the city from Dubai to take care of the ailing party leader.
The former president had recently arrived in Karachi from Lahore and Islamabad. In Lahore he had attended a meeting with the former Punjab Prime Minister Pervaiz Elahi.
Dr. Asim Hussain said the former president had undergone a medical exam at a private hospital complaining of severe back pain.
“An orthopedic surgeon is treating Asif Zardari and he has undergone the necessary medical tests,” he told Geo News.
During his recent address to the National Assembly, Bilawal said that Zardari had attended a budget meeting despite his discomfort.
In January Zardari was already in the Dr. Ziauddin Hospital in Clifton.
A medical team carried out a series of tests on the former president following their medical examination. After them, he had back pain as well as pain in the spinal cord.
They also said that Zardari’s blood pressure was unstable and that he had difficulty breathing.
Doctors have even temporarily banned visitors from meeting the former president, with the exception of his family members. He was only allowed one companion.
He, too, has been hospitalized for health reasons in the past. In October he was transferred to a private hospital in Karachi after he felt “unwell”.
Zardari, who was nominated in several corruption cases filed by the National Accountability Bureau, was released on bail by the Islamabad High Court on medical grounds in 2019.
At the time, he had been charged with mega money laundering, Park Lane properties, and Thatta water supply references set up by the office.
During a hearing on Zardari’s bail application, his lawyer, Farooq H. Naek, told the court that the former president is “a chronic patient with multiple diseases.”
“He’s a heart patient with three stents in his heart. He has a Holter monitor attached to his chest so doctors can check and record variations in his heartbeat and blockages in his arteries. The petitioner is a patient with ischemic heart disease, which means that his heart may not be receiving adequate blood and oxygen ”.
Naek had said that Zardari “suffers from various other ailments such as cervical and lumbar spondylosis, sensory and motor neuropathy with impaired proprioception”.
Last October, the PPP leader and former president was hospitalized for low sugar levels.
