After a difficult year of pandemic challenges, stress and anxiety are at an all-time high. People have been stressed by the changing economy, politics, strained racial relationships, and concerns about COVID-19. With so many difficult things happening in 2020, people understandably have to deal with a lot of persistent stress. Joseph Girouard says CBD is the next big thing to boom after the pandemic.
Now owner of over two dozen smoke shops across the Greater Boston Area, Joe Girouard began paying close attention to the CBD industry and its potential in 2013. He has spent most of the last decade overseeing wholesale CBD manufacturing and production for a number of brands. In 2020 he bought 1/3approx of the Vangarde Group hemp farm in Texas, which produced over 4.5 million seeds for 2021.
CBD oil has been available for years and has been federally legal since the 2018 Farm Bill was passed. But, Joseph Girouard believes this is just the beginning of the industry’s growth. As people become more familiar with CBD oil and its healing properties, the demand will increase.
One of the things that is helping to bring CBD oil to the center of the mainstream, Girouard says, is the stress and anxiety that are exacerbated during the pandemic.
What is CBD?
CBD oil is one of the substances found in the cannabis plant. It’s a cannabidiol, but not responsible for creating a high (that would be THC). CBD can bring benefits to the body without having any psychoactive effects.
CBD oil can be used as a tincture (alcohol-based extract with high bioavailability), as a food, as a cream or as an oil. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), CBD shows no signs of dependence or abuse as a substance (WHO).
Full-spectrum CBD oil contains a small amount of THC – but still not enough to get you high (even if you’re taking a very high dose of CBD). The full-spectrum CBD also contains flavonoids, terpenes, and other cannabinoids. A CBD isolate is further refined to contain only CBD.
Full spectrum CBD or CBD isolate?
Some believe that full-spectrum CBD oil is more effective because of the entourage effect. They believe that taking more phytocannabinoids together will provide more support for the body’s endocannabinoid system. There are more than 120 different phytocannabinoids in the cannabis plant, including cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The entourage effect states that these connections work together and are more effective when combined rather than isolated.
Other people are nervous that THC might show up on a drug test or affect them beyond relaxation. While full-spectrum CBD oil is legally only allowed to contain less than 0.3% THC, manufacturers vary and you will need to choose a company that you can trust.
Why Use CBD Oil?
Does CBD Oil Really Work? That’s a common question that Joseph Girouard is used to its use as CBD oil is slowly becoming accepted for everyday use.
WHO notes that most of the research has focused on the benefits of CBD oil for epilepsy. In addition, the WHO says it is limited evidence That suggests it can be used for a number of other conditions, as well as drug addiction. The WHO says: “The range of conditions for which CBD has been assessed is diverse, consistent with its neuroprotective, anti-epileptic, hypoxic-ischemia, anxiolytic, antipsychotic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-asthmatic and anti-tumor properties.”
In 2020, Individual care conducted a survey that found approximately 33% of adults in the US have used CBD. About a quarter of Americans mistakenly believe that CBD oil is the same thing as marijuana.
“Of Americans who use CBD, the most common uses are for pain relief (64%), anxiety (49%), and insomnia (42%). (Individual care, 2020) “
According to research compiled by the WHO, CBD offers support for anxiety with signs of decreased muscle tension, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and improving social interactions.
As a study notes: “There is evidence of a calming effect of CBD on the central nervous system. Interest in CBD as a treatment for a wide variety of diseases has exploded, yet few clinical studies on CBD exist in the psychiatric literature. “
Coping with the stress level after COVID
There is a lot of hope with possible solutions on the horizon. The CDC recently suggested that because of the effectiveness of the vaccine, vaccinated individuals could be safely exposed in public. But there are still many unknowns.
In January 2021, the American Psychological Association Stress snapshot showed that stress was higher than ever before in 2020. The report found that 84% of adults showed signs of persistent stress, including overwork (67%), anxiety (47%), and sadness (44%).
Prolonged stress puts a strain on the body and mind. Joseph Girouard believes that stress relief, like high quality CBD oil, is more important now than ever.
