Almost every patient who has ever come to my practice has hoped that I could relieve their physical pain. Whether in the back, neck or extremities. I don’t think anyone walked in and said, “Doc, can you help my brain get better?” But maybe they should!

Thanks to the groundbreaking research of Dr. Heidi Haavik, we now have scientific research that explains how chiropractic adjustments can actually change how the brain works. Chiropractic care actually has positive effects on the brain, and regular adjustments can improve your mental health and overall brain function. Who wouldn’t want that side benefit?!

All this is the work of Dr. Credit to Heidi Haavik, a chiropractor and neurophysiologist who has worked in the field of human neurophysiology for more than 15 years. Her research has laid the foundation of scientific evidence for the effectiveness of chiropractic care in improving people’s health and well-being. She led a groundbreaking study of the impact on the brain after spinal remodeling.

The 2015 study included participants who reported no pain and had never received chiropractic treatment before. They were divided into two groups, one of which received a chiropractic adjustment while their brain activity was recorded. The other group did not receive a chiropractic adjustment (although it appeared they would), but their brain activity was recorded.

The group of participants who received the fitting showed stimulation of the prefrontal cortex, indicating that the fitting had a direct effect on sensory input to the brain. In contrast, the brains of the second group showed no changes.

We know from previous studies that a vertebral subluxation disrupts the communication between the brain and spinal cord with the corresponding joints and surrounding muscles. Haavik’s study scientifically shows that chiropractic treatments help improve brain function.

Your brain and nervous system are in the conductor’s seat when it comes to controlling every function in your body: attention, balance, breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, hormone production, and thousands of other functions, to name a few. When something needs to be done, the brain sends the signal through the nervous system to get things done. If the spine is sick, this slows down communication and the resulting performance.

So it goes hand in hand, when your brain and nervous system are working well, the rest of your body is working well too.

We usually think of chiropractic treatments primarily as pain relief, but the real goal is to have a positive effect on the neuroplasticity of the brain. By removing the stressors through chiropractic adjustments, we remove the interference and improve neuroplasticity.
