Here are five key reasons why chiropractic care is essential for athletes:

1) Chiropractic treatment results in improved range of motion.

One benefit of regular chiropractic care is improved range of motion. Because athletes put a lot of pressure and stress on their bodies, physically intense activities can cause problems with spinal alignment and movement. It’s not uncommon for an athlete to end up with stiffness and sore joints. This can limit their range of motion and thereby inhibit their overall performance.

2) Chiropractic treatment gives athletes a reduced healing time.

Athletes can experience a variety of injuries, muscle, tendon and ligament strains, tears, aches and pains. These injuries can often result in soft tissue damage that can take weeks or even months to heal. As the body heals, it forms scar tissue over the injured area. Scar tissue can reduce flexibility and strength, as well as muscle pain and joint stiffness.

Chiropractic not only reduces the pain associated with injury recovery, but also helps the body recover faster. Soft tissue adjustments and manipulations can help break up scar tissue to increase flexibility, elasticity, and strength during recovery.

3) Fewer prescription drugs are needed.

While pain can be managed with over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers, cortisone shots, and other medications that provide short-term relief, chiropractic care offers athletes a drug-free alternative that can reduce or even eliminate pain. This also means that they are not exposed to possible harmful side effects or addictions that often result from the use of prescription drugs.

4) Chiropractic offers a non-invasive treatment option.

Chiropractic care is non-invasive and can relieve injuries anywhere on the body, not just neck and back injuries. It can even serve as a viable alternative to invasive procedures like surgery that would put athletes on hold during a long recovery period. Additional treatments such as Electrical Muscle Stimulation, Low Level Light Therapy, the Graston Technique, and the Active Release Technique can be used to treat athletes with a variety of injuries.

5) Increase response times.

A research study from the New Zealand School of Chiropractic and the University of Auckland examined the impact that chiropractic adjustment can have on reaction times. Two groups were tested to examine differences in reaction times: one group received spinal adjustments, while the other group, which received only a short rest period, served as a comparison group. The group that got only one rest period showed an average decrease in reaction time: 58 milliseconds, an 8% faster reaction time. The group that received the chiropractic adjustment showed a reduction in reaction time of 97 milliseconds, a 14.8% faster reaction time.
