ASHLAND, WI – The Miller-Dwan Foundation generously awarded the NorthLakes Community Clinic (NLCC) a grant to fund their pediatric therapy loan cabinet. The loan cabinet improves access to at-home treatment options for children with sensory processing disorders, autism spectrum disorders, language disorders, and developmental and learning disabilities. The loan cabinet is available to individuals receiving pediatric employment and/or speech therapy services at the NLCC clinics in Hayward, Ashland and Iron River. Nearly 250 children benefit from NLCC’s Pediatric Therapies Lending Closet each year.

The loan cabinet gives parents and guardians access to tools and basic training that will allow them to perform some treatments at home. The equipment helps with social thinking, speech therapy, oral stimulation, coordination, balance, motor skills, bowel and bladder issues, and sensory feeding activities. Many of the articles promote independence, the improvement of social skills and increased success in a variety of tasks. Borrowing devices through the Loan Cabinet allows patients to determine if the device is helpful for their treatment by trying it before they buy it. The loan cabinet also prevents patients from making costly investments in equipment intended for short-term use.

An example of devices that employees are happy to put in the loan cabinet is a Boundex. This is a portable 4×4 swing that helps toddlers with motor delays, but costs about $500 each. Other items purchased through the Miller-Dwan Foundation grant include exercise balls, collapsible tunnels, lycra tunnels, weight vests, body stockings, lycra circles, books, iPads and online apps, and various bottles and pacifiers.

NorthLakes Community Clinic CEO Reba Rice says this program would be difficult to sustain without the help of generous foundations like Miller Dwan. “We are so grateful for this funding which is helping to break down barriers for children in our pediatric therapy program. We recognize the financial hardship these tools can impose on families throughout northern Wisconsin and are proud to offer this benefit to our patients through the strong support of partners like the Miller-Dwan Foundation and private donors who help us to maintain this program.”

In addition to receiving a grant from the Miller-Dwan Foundation, the lending closet has also grown thanks to support from generous donations from community members, matching a grant from Delta Diner employees. NLCC recently received a donation from an Ironwood resident whose son benefited from the opportunity to borrow equipment from the loan closet. As part of her donation, she noted how grateful she was to the program that helped her son and wished it had existed for her older son years ago. She hopes this donation can help other people with similar struggles.
