SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, September 1, 2021 // PRNewswire // – The upcoming school year will be a change for many families. Between the transition back to personal learning, organized exercise, play dates and more, it can be exhausting for young bodies. The Joint Corp. (NASDAQ: JYNT), the nation’s largest provider of chiropractic care through The Joint Chiropractic® network, encourages families to discuss the importance of spinal health and how it affects children after they return to school.

Upon returning to campus, students spend long periods of time at desks, which can affect their posture and back. Bad backpacking habits, long phone, tablet, and computer hours (which can lead to technical necks), and even some extracurricular activities can put strain on your body. A healthy nervous system, brain, muscles, and joint movement enable school children and exercise students to reach developmental milestones and the ability to adapt to the stresses in their lives.

“Every year children undergo body changes and habits that they grew out of in the summer at home, such as sitting at a desk, lugging around heavy backpacks, and exercising after school,” said Steven Knauf, DC, executive director of chiropractic and health Compliance at The Joint Corp. “One of the best ways to help your child maintain their spine well being after returning to school and avoid misalignments and structural problems such as the technical neck is to encourage daily activity and correct posture. Or a Doing a couple of jumping jacks helps avoid the muscle strain that can come with sitting in one place for long periods of time. “

The time you spend looking at a screen to write to friends and study can damage the structures in the neck and spine, often referred to as the technical neck. It is important to teach children to hold their tablet or phone at eye level to reduce pressure on the neck. The head typically weighs around 10 to 12 pounds when upright. When the head is tilted forward, it can add extra strain to the neck and reach up to 50 or even 60 pounds of pressure.

Additionally, back to school means shopping, and the American Chiropractic Association suggests the following tips to consider when finding a kid’s backpack and packing:

  • Backpacks shouldn’t be wider or longer than a child’s torso;
  • Choose a backpack with a padded back and shoulder straps;
  • Be aware that bigger is not always better – the more space there is, the more weight you can carry. A fully loaded children’s backpack should never weigh more than 10-15% of the total body weight; and
  • Pack the heaviest things as close to your back and body as possible.

Children of all ages, from infants to tween and adolescent athletes, can enjoy regular chiropractic treatments.
