Law enforcement agencies take part in an active shooting exercise

This training came two months after the deadly shooting on Sixth Street that killed one person and injured 13 others.

Austin Police and other law enforcement officers filled part of Sixth Street Tuesday for active assault training.

This training came two months after the deadly shooting on Sixth Street that killed one person and injured 13 others. The entire training was a staged active shooting situation and took place at the Vulcan Gas Company.

“The more training we can do, the better we get,” said APD Commander Jeff Greenwalt.

The training was a joint effort by APD, Austin Fire, EMS, DPS, and other officials.

“The basic plan of what we are trying to do is to respond as quickly as possible with a police presence so we can prevent people from getting injured as soon as possible, and then we have to prevent people from dying from injuries that they might have, ”said Commander Greenwalt.

Austin City Council is considering options to improve security on 6th St.

The decision would instruct the city manager to consider setting up a special ambulance presence in the area on weekends in addition to lighting and distance considerations.

Cam Ludwig, the general manager of the Vulcan Gas Company, was working on the night of filming. After witnessing that, he says, it was important to him that APD and the other officials were allowed to use his business for their training

Commander Greenwalt says it’s important to have a good relationship with downtown businesses. He also says APD will continue to host these type of training situations.

“I don’t think the importance of this scenario and this training can be underestimated. We have seen lives have been saved, not just here in the Austin area, but across the country when people are willing to work together, ”he said.
