Sara Hodson, CEO of LIVE WELL Exercise Clinic, has been elected to lead the National Trade Association that represents more than 6,000 fitness facilities across Canada.

EDMONTON, AB, August 18, 2021 / CNW / – In a bold statement on the importance of exercise for physical and mental health, the Fitness Industry Council of Canada (FIC) elected Medical Exercise Expert Sara Hodson, CEO of the LIVE WELL exercise clinic, as the new President of the National General Assembly.

“It is an honor and a privilege to work to improve the lives of Canadians,” says Hodson. “We know exercise is medicine, preventing and treating almost all chronic health conditions – from diabetes to heart disease, obesity, blood pressure, depression, and many cancers and anxiety – something that has plagued us all for the past 18 months. We have a lot of work to do, but it is important work. It’s life-saving work. ”

More than 80 percent of Canadians are currently not getting the recommended 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per week. Both the World Health Organization and the United Nations have urged governments to prioritize physical activity as part of national health policies.

Scott Wildeman, the outgoing president, cast his vote for Hodson early on. “I really admire what Sara has done for the fitness industry and where it will take us. After working closely with Sara over the past year, her leadership is in British Columbia set the tone of how she will serve as president. Sara has the proven expertise to take our fitness association to new heights. “

Hodson is federal leader in a lobbying campaign to make gym membership tax deductible in the next election; the motion was not included in the spring budget and the FIC intends to make this a political issue leading up to the recently called for elections September 20thNS. As co-chair of the FIC coalition for British Columbia, Hodson has been instrumental in keeping fitness facilities open across the province. During one phase of the pandemic, BC was the only province in Canada To have open fitness facilities.

Hodson has successfully mastered its own business challenges with its LIVE WELL Exercise Clinic fitness concept – supervised training clinics for people with health problems – helping its franchisees switch from personal training sessions to live streaming within five days of the start of the pandemic. Switch sessions March 2020. She then boldly and sensitively guided her brand through repeated lockdowns, strategic reopening plans, and creative online membership retention events.

Her immediate priority as FIC President is to get all political parties to include gym membership as a tax-deductible expense on their voting platforms. “We have considerable data that we will be sharing in the coming weeks. Exercise needs to be part of the public health debate, and we know Canadians will be motivated to return to a gym if there is financial support. Canada could become a world leader and be the first country in the world to add movement to a national health agenda. We have to seize this moment now and bring about a fundamental change. “

“People need community more than ever; we need support and accountability, ”says Hodson. “In addition, we need qualified training professionals who will lead us out of the dark times of the pandemic. Movement will be the foundation of our recovery as a nation from the pandemic. The fitness industry is ready to help Canadians regain their health and experience all the benefits of an active lifestyle.
