What does Kevon Looney mean to exercise Warriors' contract option?

What Looney means to Warriors in exercising the contract option originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

Kevon Looney has just finished his sixth season with the Warriors.

And all the signs point to the 25-year-old turning seven in 2021-22.

Looney will exercise its $ 5.2 million player option, sources said ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

What does this mean for Golden State?

For one thing, Steve Kerr must be delighted with this news, because you won’t find a bigger Looney fan in the entire organization.

In addition, it is possible that the Warriors will start the next season with Looney as the starting XI. This is especially true when you remember that James Wiseman is rehabilitating after knee surgery and may not be complete by the time the training camp starts in late September.

Looney knows how to play alongside Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green and enjoys the full trust of the coaching staff.

The experienced vet knows his role and plays to his strengths.

Looney’s place on the depth map could of course change depending on what happens to the draft and the free agency.

And it’s important to note that Looney could be drawn into the deal for payroll purposes if the Warriors hit a blockbuster trade this summer.

But assuming the # 30 pick from the 2015 draft isn’t shipping out of town, it will almost certainly play a valuable role every night for the next season.

When Jim Harbaugh was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, he often referred to various players as “trusted agents.”

And that’s exactly what Looney is for the dubs.
