I was recently going to have lunch with a friend and she texted me at the last minute saying she has a migraine. I turned the car around, drove home, grabbed my book “Kopfschmerzfrei” and gave it to her.
When I checked on her the next day, she was much better than she normally would be 24 hours after the episode. She said she tried a few of the quick hacks that I recommended and improved upon in my book, so today’s article is devoted to migraines and the migraines that cause them!
A “migrenade” is what I mean for substances that go off like a grenade in your brain and trigger a migraine. It’s an invented term that works well and is instantly understood. All of the pain-causing cytokines in your body should be viewed as migrenades as they are responsible for the pain and inflammation associated with headaches. One of them is NF Kappa B, which is discussed below. But first of all, I suggest that if you ever want to feel better, you minimize or eliminate these most powerful migraines:
- Artificial sweeteners and colors
- All clothing that needs to be dry cleaned
- Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
- Bromine-containing vegetable oil
- Fancy dryer sheets
- Perfume that contains synthetic chemicals
By the way, you can make your own dryer sheets by taking some cotton and adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil and tossing it in the dryer with your clothes. I like lavender mixed with wild orange or lemon essential oil. The possibilities with natural essential oils are limitless and this trick will not harm your endocrine glands.
Now let’s cover two important nutrients that will support your endocrine gland health *
Iodine is one of the ingredients that help make thyroid hormones. Low thyroid hormone levels are a cause of migraines, so iodine or a good thyroid supplement can help reduce the frequency.
This herb comes from a shrub native to India and is also called Indian ginseng. The extract helps in the formation of thyroid hormones and offers antioxidant protection. One of my favorite thyroid (and adrenal) health supplements is “winter cherry” or ashwagandha, botanically known as Withania somnifera. I often suggest it as an option for people who can’t sleep because it’s so comforting. This herb is a powerful antioxidant and protects your DNA.
NF Kappa B
Previously I mentioned NF Kappa B as a natural compound in your body, but it has been linked to migraines. Activation of this substance has also been linked to facial pain, autoimmune diseases, depression, anxiety, attention deficit, diabetes, chronic infections, obesity, and the very fact that you are getting older.
Fortunately, there are natural compounds that can slow this path down and relieve pain. The best ones include probiotic supplements, a cup of green tea, lipoic acid, omega-3 fish oils, curcumin, lipoic acid, resveratrol, and a few others. The popular diabetes drug “Metformin” also curbs this path.
