Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Hamilton is just one win away from becoming the first driver to achieve triple-digit racing wins after having achieved pole position for a century in Spain earlier this year.

Hamilton took his 99th British Grand Prix victory in July but has been waiting to finally hit 100 ever since. His offer was compromised by a strategy error in Hungary and then by a bad start in the sprint race in Italy before clashing with title rival Max Verstappen in the Grand Prix.

Hamilton started the Russian Grand Prix weekend in a strong position to win from the start thanks to Verstappen’s start, but was only able to qualify in fourth on Saturday after a chaotic Q3, behind Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz and George Russell.

Hamilton dismissed any superstition about achieving 100 victories after qualifying, but admitted the wait was longer than ever.

“It will come when it does, but of course I’ll give it my all tomorrow to chase the number 100,” said Hamilton.

“It’s a big number. It seems like it’s going to take longer than ever to get. It’s a pretty cool number to wait for.”

Hamilton starts Sunday’s race five points behind Verstappen at the top of the drivers’ standings and will try to make up early positions to maximize the chance of winning the race and regaining the points lead.

The accident with Verstappen at Monza left Hamilton struggling with minor neck pain after the Red Bull’s bike made light contact with his helmet.

Over the weekend in Sochi, Hamilton posted some videos on social media showing his trainer Angela Cullen working on his neck.

When asked if he was struggling with his neck at all, Hamilton revealed that he felt a little tense after driving for the first time since the accident on Friday.

“We did a lot last week, I felt really good, got back into training and generally got here with a good feeling,” said Hamilton.

“And then, after the day I was in the car, my neck was a little tense and I woke up in pain in the morning. I was in pain yesterday and we worked on it.

“I woke up again this morning with a little pain in my muscles. Angela was just working on releasing a trigger point this morning.

“But in general it’s fine. It’s just a little nervousness.”
