Doha: Al-Ahli Hospital successfully operated on a 50-year-old woman who was admitted to a neurosurgical clinic for four months with recurrent lower back pain and right sciatica.
This has been linked to progressive weakness of the right foot or the medical term “foot drop”.
It should be noted that she had two lumbar disc removals in the UK. After clinical examination and radiological examinations, the hospital decided that a third surgical procedure was indicated to remove pressure from the affected nerve and restore the foot’s lost function.
This time, however, the operation should be done in the form of a lumbar fusion / decompression. It should reduce the risk of recurrence and ensure the stability of the lumbar spine.
The operation was successfully performed and the function of the right foot was fully restored.
Dr. El Fatih Bashir El-Malik, a specialist in neurosurgery, said, “The anatomical structure of the spine is made up of a large number of intervertebral discs and other symmetrical joints that overlap to allow movement in all directions. At the same time, the ligaments that surround the joints retain a certain stability in all positions. “
He explains that this delicate balance between stability and elasticity of the spine can sometimes be lost, leading to so-called spinal instability symptoms, which are usually acute or chronic lower back pain, with or without sciatica.
The suspected cases will undergo a physical exam and special tests for further assessment, including dynamic x-rays that examine the relationship between the spinal elements in different positions that affect daily activities.
In persistent cases that are unresponsive to conservative treatments such as medication and physical therapy, surgery is recommended.
This includes the fixation of the affected levels with special implants that are inserted into the spine without contact with the nervous system.
These implants contain special bone grafts that fuse the region over the long term for added stability.
These operations are considered complex as they involve the reconstruction of the treated levels of the spine.
However, patients can usually walk the next day after the operation and the hospital stay is only a few days. This is one of the most routinely performed surgeries at the Neurosurgery Clinic with great results.
