Nine days after his operation, the Pope left the Gemelli Hospital. He first went to St. Maria Maggiore to pray in front of the picture of Mary “Salus populus romani”, which according to tradition was painted by the Evangelist Luke.
A press release from the Holy See announced this Wednesday, July 14th, the Pope’s return to his St. Martha home.
“In response to questions from journalists, the Director of the Press Office of the Holy See, Matteo Bruni, confirmed that the Holy Father left the A. Gemelli University Hospital just after 10.30 this morning,” the statement said.
“Before returning to the house of Saint Martha in the Vatican, the Pope went to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, as it is further stated, where he thanked the icon of the Virgin“ Salus Populi Romani ”for the success of his operation Prayer for all the sick, especially those he met during his stay. “
The same press release said the Pope was back at St. Martha’s House “just before noon”.
As seen in a photo of a Vaticanist, the Pope used a wheelchair.
In addition, Pope Francis can stand, but at the moment he does not seem to be able to walk. Which sparked speculation about his true health.
However, it seems difficult to medically assess these elements, since the Pope is known to be suffering from sciatica: the operation, with its consequences, could not improve this pathology, and difficulty walking at this stage does not seem abnormal.
