Visual impairment

Visual impairment affects people of all ages and the majority of those affected are over 50 years old. According to the WHO, at least one billion people on this planet have an impairment of near or television viewing that could be prevented. Visual impairment and blindness affect all aspects of life, including daily activities, access to public services, and more.

What are the causes of visual impairment?

The main causes of visual impairment are non-operated cataracts and uncorrected refractive errors. Other factors include age-related macular degeneration, infectious diseases of the eye, glaucoma, trauma, and diabetic retinopathy. However, one should not ignore these causes and should consult a doctor.

World Eyesight Day 2021: Tips for Improved Eyesight

To maintain healthy eyesight, follow the tips below:

1- Eat right

Your plate should have foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Add a healthy serving of green vegetables, salmon, eggs, and citrus fruits. Eating a healthy diet reduces the chances of developing diabetes, which is a leading cause of blindness.

2- Manage screen time

In an age where almost everything is digitized, managing screen time is of the utmost importance as it can lead to dry, itchy, or red eyes.

Some of the effective methods of managing screen time are as follows:

A. Take a break from the screen every 20 minutes.
B. If you use a computer, make sure you use a supportive chair and keep your screen at eye level to avoid neck and shoulder pain and headaches.
C. Don’t forget to blink your eyes.
D. Wear protective glasses when using a computer, tablet, or phone.
e. Avoid using your phone or tablet while lying in bed.

3- Get regular examinations

Make it a habit to get regular checkups. See an ophthalmologist if a potential vision problem arises during the screening.

4- Maintain a healthy lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle can greatly improve your eyesight or reduce the risk of eye health deteriorating. These include moderating alcohol consumption, quitting smoking, giving your eyes proper rest, and practicing eye exercises.

5- Wear sunglasses

If you go out in the sun don’t forget to wear sunglasses. Your sunglasses must offer you 99-100% protection against UVA and UVB rays.
