He didn't know it was a cancer warning sign. After a visit to A&E he was given the "huge blow" of a brain tumor. Steve, who lives in a house with his wife Anna (47), and his three children Lauren (28), Mya (24), and Evan (21), said: "I could not explain how I felt. "I was still able to communicate and coordinate, but it felt so strange. It would happen when I was at my checkout at work. "I put it down to drinking too much caffeine so I didn't think much about it." "I was just being a typical guy and played it down." He put it off even when he called them from his hospital bed to tell them the terrible news. "I called Anna and she was drinking wine with her kids," he said. "They were all joking and laughing in the background, so I decided to tell the next day. "I didn't want to tell them, when they were so happy." It was a lonely, sad evening for me. They had "tears" in their eyes when they visited him the following day. Steve was "determined" and remained positive. Steve says that after being discharged from the military on November 19, he cycled every day. He believes this made him "even more stronger". On January 17, last year, he successfully removed the tumour. "It was probably mixed emotions," he said. "I was worried that it would come back, but I was overjoyed when they removed 99.9% of the tumour." I put it down to drinking too much caffeine and didn't think much about it. Steve Biggin The father attributes his rapid recovery to his active lifestyle. He said: "Cycling helped me through some of the toughest times, and I believe it helped me recover emotionally and physically from the surgery. "My fitness played an important role and, seven week later, I rode my bike 35 miles with a friend on the road. "I was already strong-willed, but cycling made me stronger." Steve started his radiotherapy a week later. He had it for six weeks at five times per week. Then he began taking chemotherapy in tablet form for five consecutive days, with 23 days of rest, for a period of 12 months. His chemotherapy ended in March 2023. This was a "massive relieve" for his family. "My tumour took more toll on them than I did, and Anna, Anna was my absolute rock," said he. Steve celebrated by taking part in Etape Caledonia, an 85-mile closed road cycling event in Highland Perthshire. He also plans to cycle 141 miles from Morecambe, to Scarborough over three days, at the end June. Steve, who is raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity said, "I carry a small amount on my shoulder, thinking it could return." "But, hey! I'm 51. I have a wonderful family.
